Xia (Thor) Vang Scholarship


The Xia (Thor) Vang Scholarship is sponsored by Mai Zong Vue, Volunteer Program Director for Hmong Language and Cultural Enrichment Program (HLCEP) . In honor of Xia’s love for education, self-starter, diligent and positive outlook in life, Mai Zong Vue dedicates this scholarship in memory of her mother, Xia, who supported Mai Zong’s desire to earn her education. Xia was a woman ahead of her time. She was a strong-will and a self-starter woman, for she did not wait for others. Instead, she found ways to get there herself. Xia believed that hard work earns respect. Xia always saw the glass half full, which gave her much resilience. The award recipient selected for the Xia Vang Scholarship shares similar values and attributes of Xia. The scholarship will recognize a middle school refugee student, who excels academically. The recipient will be awarded one time amount of $500.

Criteria and Eligibility:

1. Must be of refugee descent other than Hmong
2. Must be enrolled in middle school
3. Must Have Wisconsin residency
4. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident alien
5. Must have a GPA of 2.75 or higher

Applicant evaluations are based on:

1. Academic performance
2. Level of needs
3. Community involvements
4. Response to written essays
